Speaking to the BBC, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga welcomed the speech.
"We should stop blaming colonialism for our under-development. We really need to address issues of governance, because I believe it is the mediocrity with which Africa has been governed that is responsible for our backwardness today."

How true, colonialism may have brought many things to Africa, but now is the time to get rid of it as an excuse for every ill perpetrated on the people of Africa by power hungry leaders and would be leaders. It will take more than words, it will take a lot of hard work and determination.

Barack Obama has a way of cutting through to the crux of the matter, I hope it translates into much good. Even if it doesn't, I enjoy his speeches.

I second Twaffle. He really has the poise and confidence of a true leader. Just saw clips of the speech on the news. Nothing more to add, besides ......... Exactly right on!

I do hope the people of Kenya do hear this speech and improve. I do like his speeches and I did vote for him. But things are still bad in the US economy and on the job market front. People get lazy and the greedy up top take that to an advantage..no matter what county. I do hope we are finally turning into a positive direction. This President can make that happen with global relations at least.

I think we need a second crash before things will really change.

I hope not, but you may be right.

I think we are all a bit naive if we think one man can turn a country around, and thus a world economy. I have never thought that. In our country, much of the problem is driven by confidence. Perhaps that is the case elsewhere also, but if there is corruption (political or economic) at the top especially, then it is much harder to turn things around. Just look at how hard it is for African countries with instilled corruption to gain the confidence of their own people, let alone the rest of the world. Much of the economic mess has been driven by greed and (dare I say) corruption in developed countries. So we may look down on the insidious corruption in the third world, but we have to deal with it every day in our own lives, in one way or another.
