I love the little birds. They are much harder to photograph I think, due to the fact that it's difficult to fill the frame with them.

Geoff am not sure about the injury, wasn't bad so was released pretty quick, love your swan pic i have got a similar pic but on a overcast day, love the ruffled feathers look.

Nomad & mmackwan,

 

Yep that swan meant business. i was walking past its nest when in a flash it was coming straight at me. I took that one shot and beat a hasty retreat.

We spent 6 weeks camped on the banks of the Victoria river just outside Timber Ck in the Northern Territory.

At low tide this bad boy would often fish in the shallows right below the truck and the first time I saw him I nearly broke a leg getting down to the water level. After a while though I had so many photos that I didn't bother taking any more. Occasionally his girlfriend (they have yellow eyes) would turn up as well.

If I just sat on the bank he would often get so close I couldn't focus with the 400, at times like this I'd like a long zoom.

Last July we took a day-long tour with Del Richards out of Port Douglas, Queensland. We're not hardcore twitchers, but wanted to see some of the birds in the area. In the end, we saw more than 90 different species, including some of the following:

Red-browed Firetail Finch

 

Macleay's Honeyeater (endemic to the region)

 

Double-eyed Fig-Parrot

 

Galah

 

Red-back Fairy-wren (female here)

A few more recent images. Hooded Plovers. Like your Piping Plover this species is endangered and i do a lot of volunteer work with Birdlife Australia monitoring this species.

 

I took the image of the chick about 2 days before it fledged. The amazing story behind the chick is that it was one of two chicks to fledge that was reared by a single male parent after the female parent bird was killed by a fox a day before they hatched.
