hey GW, you could insert the links I posted in another thread with videos of three Kwando Camps here - I might later add footage of Mara Sarova and Mara Serena, where I recently stayed

As a counterpoint to Elsas', Shimba Lodge in Shimba Hills National Reserve, about an hour outside Mombasa, is the only accomodation available inside the reserve. With 67 rooms, it is hardly small and private,it's a rather dark, tired building, designed apparently by a crew of drunken hobbits! However, the reserve is a delightful place to visit, being the habitat of Kenyas remaining Sable antelope population, and with its proximity to Mwaluganje elephant sanctuary, which is well worth a visit, is home to a fair bit of wildlife. The landscape is vaguely reminiscent of parts of the UK/Ireland and if you're in the vicinity, a recommended stop.7851407928_ce9d870f13_b.jpg

ol Donyo Lodge, Chyulu Hills, Kenya (16-19 September 2013). Ten suites in 275,000 acres of Maasai land. No one else, just the guests of the lodge (now Kenya's first Relais & Châteaux member), wildlife and the villagers of the Mbirikani Group Ranch. Day and night game drives, guided walking, horse riding, mountain biking, game viewing hide, lava tube and village visits, hike to the mist forest, day-trips to Amboseli, fly to Kilimanjaro in a light aircraft, go on anti-poaching patrol with tracker dogs, chill in the pool looking out to Kilimanjaro and sleep-out on roof-top star beds. Activities abound!

Indeed they are recycled old railway sleepers for the decks and flooring of the tents. They in fact came from South Africa I believe as we were not able to source these in Kenya.

Morning Tea

~ Photographed on 29 July, 2015 at 8:09 am at the Emakoko, Nairobi, Kenya, with a Sony RX1 R camera.

ISO 160, f/5.6, 1/80 sec., 35mm focal length, handheld Automatic exposure.

*******************************************************************************************************

I'd seldom experienced the low-key hospitality offered by the Emakoko. Prior to heading out on a morning nature walk, tea was brought to my room with chocolate chip cookies, no less.

Sitting alone on the quiet veranda, overlooking the vegetation, listening to bird songs, I wrote the safari trip diary for the previous day, recalling and recording sightings and events.

The Emakoko is a wonderful setting for reflection on life's goodness, as one's basic needs are cared for with discretion and warmth by the superb staff.

A Short Stroll Away

~ Photographed on 29 July, 2015 at 10:28 am adjacent to Nairobi National Park, Kenya, with a Sony RX1 R camera.

ISO 100, f/11, 1/80 sec., 35mm focal length, handheld Automatic exposure.

*******************************************************************************************************

This landscape image is posted to show what the terrain is like in the immediate environs of the Emakoko. We walked at a moseying pace for less than ten minutes to reach this verdant sight.

There were kingfishers, butterflies, dragonflies and a distant secretary bird at and around this location. The graceful trees over gently flowing water were easy on the eyes.

Emakoko guests may request a guided nature walk through such territory in lieu of either the morning or the afternoon game drive, as they prefer.
