I used to call myself a ‘birdo’. Since then I have coined a new term: a ‘noticer of birds’

It has finally stopped raining here. Whilst southern Africa suffers from drought we have had rain almost every day for the past 2 weeks. Can we do a trade?

Then on Sunday night the temperature plummeted and we woke to our first frosty morning.

Time to get out and about, who knows how long before it rains again. :(

Black-tailed Godwits everywhere at the moment, Turnstones too; but I've already logged those.

i thought I'd found a new one for a few moments until I realised that they were just Dunlisn with slightly different coloured plumage.

so it was just 2 new ones for the morning.

  • 4 weeks later...

Back in the UK again after a visit to India, helping a friend put together an itinerary for an agricultural tour. It certainly got me looking at India in a different way. We did visit a couple of wildlife reserves and even went to one city, but most of the time we were out in the countryside.

Birding in India is a bit weird at the moment. Although the monsoon was both very late and very heavy in much of India, in Keoladeo Ghana (bird sanctuary beside Bharatpur) the monsoon was quite weak and water levels in the park are way down on what they should normally be in November.

There was also a complete absence of migratory species in the park. The popular theory is that because there is so much water everywhere, the birds have too much choice and are stopping away from their usual spots. This also proved to be the case in the other birding spots we visited.

I had hoped to get around 200 species on my list but only managed 128.

Still, I do have a few to get my BY tally moving again.

Another thing that made it a wee bit harder than usual was the heavy pollution that seemed to be hanging over much of Northern India. At its worst around Delhi, but evident as far away as Udaipur. Skies were mostly grey, not blue and long range shots were almost a waste of time due to the heavy haze.

One of the birds I had hoped to see was the Pheasant-tailed Jacana, sadly I did not manage to see one. :(

Lovely photos from India, in particular superb photos of the Barbet.

Interesting to hear of the impact of pollution and of the variability of the monsoon. Were you there at the beginning of November or are you just back?
