we went to a trip to Dunstable Downs ( the Bison hill area)  last weekend hoping to see the Duke of Burgundy that lives on scrubby chalk downland.it is the only "Metalmark" in Europe

we also saw the first -for us-Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) of the year

and this Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus)- so small it can almost hide in a buttercup

and a green Hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) which is actually brown- as you can see from the inner wing exposed-it is the iridescence that  makes it look green

we have just spent a week in Norfolk and the Broads are the home of one of the rarest UK butterflies, and one that looks like it belongs in more exotic climes, the Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) it is also the UK's largest.

whilst walking in our local nature reserve we noticed quite a few of these- the 5 spotted Burnet moth (not to be confused with the 6 spot or the narrow bordered 5 spot!!!. i think they must have just emerged.the 1st photo is taken with a 100-400 Olympus lens and the 2nd with the 90 mm macro- if that helps

Omygosh, this makes me so exciting! This is my first time seeing this type of butterfly that looks like a lady bug. Wooow!! This is amazing....
