155.) Western Bonelli´s Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli) / Berglaubsänger

Very similar to the Wood Warbler, but there´s no yellow in the face. Taken yesterday morning, Gaisau/Tirol

Great shots Michael, but I think your scenery shots are the real stars. Really stunning! Hmmm...maybe I need to up Austria and the Alps up on my list of future destinations.

@@michael-ibk, what a beautiful place you live, the hiking would be fantastic. To add to that, you have the rest of Europe at your back door, a quick trip to Spain no less. Jealous...... That little Eurasian Wren is very cute indeed.

156.) Ring Ouzel (Turdus torquatus) / Ringdrossel

Very heavy crop - all my new conquests did prefer to keep a good distance.

157.) Alpine or Yellow-Billed Chough (Pyrrhocorax graculus) / Alpendohle

Quite a common bird actually, in Winter they even come down to the city.

158.) Common Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) / Fichtenkreuzschnabel

My favourite from today, and the first time I have ever seen this very cool bird. Had been looking for it for quite some time now, and pretty much stopped believing we really have them in Tirol. :)

A Male, the females are more greenish.

They use their unusual crossed bill to extract seeds from cones.

Another lovely hike in the mountains! BTW, why they named that red bird a "crossbill"?

Have a closer look at the second picture, the crossed bill is in evidence there. :)

Time to get out of Europe - the next birds will all be from my May trip to South Africa.

Trip Report is here: http://safaritalk.net/topic/16424-blue-cape-white-waters-red-dunes/

From now on I will use two counts, one for the overall one, and the count for South Africa bracketed (S1, S2). When I "return" to Europe I will use E159, E160 ... .

159(S1): African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) / Brillenpinguin

Boulders Beach, Simon´s Town, 15/5/2016

-/S3 and 161/S4.) Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) / Rosaflamingo and Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopteridae minor) / Zwergflamingo

I already have Greater Flamingo (seen at the Ebro Delta in Spain), so it´s not included in the overall count.

Somewhere on the way from Cape Town to Cape Agulhas, 16/05/2016

167/S10.) African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) / Heiliger Ibis

Actually a very common sight in the cape area, but as is often the case with very common birds I kind of forgot about them and almost took no photos, always thinking, "Ah we see them all the time there will be a much better opportunity later." Yeah, right :)
