Hamerkop Scopus umbretta

Not sure if anybody who still doesn't know this, but the Hamerkop's is the bird in Africa that (as a single breeding pair) builds the biggest nest. Only the communal weaver's nest is larger.

A very productive trip! not too sure about your Oriole (which should have red eye and bill), looks more like some kind of Weaver?

Does look like a spectacled weaver, but it certainly didn't sound like one. Unfortunately I couldn't record it. I will look again though.

You've added some good species to the list again @@Peter Connan! And, no, it's not always possible to get good shots of them ( I know all about that..:)). but you did get some good pictures, too, the Stork, the Hamerkop! What a nest, incredible!

I agree with @@michael-ibk about the Oriole. Like you said yourself: it looks very much like a Spectacled Weaver, especially when I lighten up the shadow parts.

Keep them coming!

  • 1 month later...

I finally got some new birds!

I went to Marievale on thw 2nd of October. It was uncharacteristically quiet. Still a fair amount of water present, but it's quite smelly at the moment, I suspect because it's been stagnant for so long, and I don't know if that's why.

Most of the new sightings were either invery bad light (it was misty for most of the morning) or at long range, so I apologise beforehand for the quality.
