Whale watching Kaikoura New Zealand

After an absence of many years I drove up from Christchurch and spent a couple of hours on the whale watch tour. It was a lovely calm day and we were fortunate to see 3 sperm whales and one humpback.

 

This is our first sperm whale.

The humpback whale is apparently seen much less often but is unfortunately less photogenic as it does not tend to dive in the same way:

Towards the end of the trip the crew take us to an area where dusky dolphins tend to gather:

@@Game Warden Thank-you. If ever you get to New Zealand one positive is that the sperm whales are there year round - they are not migratory.
