No sooner had I got into the car than it had started raining. However, the birdspotting was not over. I had nearly got to the main road, where I saw a kestrel hovering and then it landed - full on gam

And some garden duplicates to make up for earlier shots   Dunnock       Goldfinch         Blue tit

Unlikely to get any more this year, unless the weather is conducive to a festive walk, leading to some unusual geese, so here's one for Christmas that we found in the wild (not a garden) in Cornwall,

+2 These are gorgeous birds which I've often seen but for one reason or another I've never managed to photograph them.

@@Tdgraves, well for me, the Thick knee is just great, love them and what a nice photo you got. #13 Pied Starling, looks like I feel when I think Ive nailed a shot only to get home, look at it on the big screen and see that Ive completely stuffed it up.

@@Tdgraves I just adore the photo of an African hoopoe because it's such an unusual bird. All of your other photos are great as well.

so that's it for Rietvlei, apart from a Steppe buzzard that I caught the back end of - I have a better shot from KNP, when I can find it...

We have had some unseasonably warm weather in the UK recently (although I think winter may be on its' way back soon). So this morning, as it looked as if the clouds would part, I set off for the nature reserve. Of course, as soon as I got there, the clouds started building again, so I cut short my walk and by the time I left, it was raining :(

I managed some good sightings though, but with very high ISO....

I was completely unprepared for the next one, so forgive me. It had got considerably darker and I had just stopped at a view point, when this flew up from the reed bed - of course, I did not have the optimal settings :(

However, my first chance of a shot at one of these birds at this site...
