A bonus when visiting Mallorca in spring is the abundance of wild flower bringing the countryside to life

S'Albufera 12.04.2017

A fairly common bird, but often seen amongst leaves and branches, giving a partial view. Very striking when seen clearly.

The last picture was taken in S'Albufera. This is a superb wetland reserve about 25km south of Port de Pollenca. It has marshland, canals and pools. I have read that as part of the school curriculum, all children on Mallorca must visit the reserve. We visited on two days and loved it. Many of the nenxt posts (in this block and beyond) will be from S'Albufera - I will put the two days together.

C'an Cuarassa, south of Port de Pollenca 11.04.2017

The Serin is very common, but no less beautiful because of that!

(We used "Birds of Spain" by de Juana and Varela to identify and name the birds from Mallorca. The English version came out a couple of monthes before we left - so good timing. The illustrations and text are excellent, and the maps good. The only negative for the book is the index which is strictly alphabetical. I am used to books where you get for example- Sandpiper, Common; Sandpiper, Green; Sandpiper Wood etc. In this book Common Sandpiper is under "C", Green Sandpiper under "G" etc. A bit annoying, especially when combined with so many birds being Common....., or Eurasian........

The book is still well worth having but I would prefer a different index!)

The second one is taken from our balcony, on the 3rd floor. In the late afternoon they would sometimes soar past us virtuallyat eye level.

@@TonyQ - lovely collection of interesting birds. Especially enjoyed the Sardinian Warbler - I spent an hour trying to get a good photo of one in Malta last year but it just wouldn't stay still!

We really enjoyed Mallorca - and I am sure that more skilled birders would see more than we did!

But to continue with S'Albufera....
