@Peter Connan I will call with my Fine Spotted Woodpecker from The Gambia.

Not dissimilar in many ways, but my favourite Woodpecker is probably the Black Woodpecker which I was lucky enough to see and photograph in Bulgaria but unfortunately I can't share as the photos are now all deleted.

Maybe someone has one to post?

@Janzin I fold, can't compete with that one:o A real stunner. Mind you if I had a Black Woody I'd still be in the game.

I'll wait to see what's dealt next before playing my next card.

@Dave Williams I really can't take credit for such a beautiful model! It's nature's doing! Woodpeckers are just about my favorite group of birds, and this has got to be one of the most striking (no pun intended.)

To me, the most iconic African bird - the Grey Crowned Crane.

Indeed I agree.

I have yet to see one of those.

That surprises me, Peter - none in SA? You know, in German they are even called "South African" Crowned Crane.

I could never compete with Mr @Peter Connan but to maintain momentum I'll second his earlier posting of South Africa's other orange breasted beauty...

Prairie Warbler , Cuba

Switching continents again, these handsome little warblers are probably common in North America but to me they are a ray of sunshine and stunningly good looking.

I'm so happy to see so much love for hummingbirds in here. They are just the best ^_^

This is my fave little buddy, a glittering-bellied emerald I dubbed "Greeny". I have a huge soft spot for him. I watched him for ages flit around and chase butterflies, and he let me come really close.

Here's the superstar checking out what my camera is doing all up in his face. He is sooooo pretty. In the sunlight his shine is incredible, really living up to his emerald name!

@Dave Williams - your post of the Prairie Warbler reminded me of us close cousin which I saw in St Lucia.

Here in North Wales we are lucky to have a Black Grouse lekking spot where you can view from the comfort of your car.

You have to be prepared to get up very early and the weather forecast is rarely correct from my experience so poor light is often an issue.

If you get lucky though they can put on quite a show.
