The Eider is a cool looking bird. Have only seen then once but not in their spectacular breeding plumage.

For my 100th from the UK, I am stepping out of date order as I wanted to show a sighting that we found particularly exciting.

270.UK.100 Sparrowhawk

 Sparrowhawk-5.jpg.c5b7fedad5db50a2f0933bd65e1f0b2d.jpg

(F) Birmingham     07.05.2018

I have not given a more precise location as people do persecute them, but it was thrilling to see them in our own city. Our only other sightings have been fairly brief glimpses as one flies high over head, so to us this was very special.

Sparrowhawk-6.jpg.e2b2db41e619fb75523874733f7694e5.jpg

Male, much higher up in the tree.

It was fascinating to watch the behaviour of the female

Stamping on the bark of the tree

Sparrowhawk-3.jpg.124ea3baa55532593c6b4887b9f75250.jpg

Digging around....

Sparrowhawk-1.jpg.4a5b5e0bb318cfe09fd620f4125a1e38.jpg

And success - a grub rather than a small bird

It's strange how we are all entranced by the sight of a predator! Nice images too Tony.

Not that strange. They are large birds, and have beautiful eyes :).

Excellent find and series, @TonyQ.

Agree! I know Sparrrowhawks are quite common for some of us, but I've never had a sighting like this one.

I love Reed Warblers, I think they are such beautiful little birds in a subtle, understated way. We have heard a lot of them this year, but glimpses are usually brief - but rewarding.

This last one was shot through the window as we were having a coffee in the cafe. You can see how much of the suet they can take in one visit.
