Oh hey!

I found a pic of the Franklin’s Gull! Also featured is my birding partner who’s really good at flushing the birds out for a good spread-wing view 😂

#167!

Got out on a pelagic bird tour this weekend and was able to get some new life (and year) birds! The visibility was terrible and frankly, this was the slowest trip in terms of any wildlife I've ever been on. Very sad that it was probably my one and only pelagic bird tour out of Monterey that I will go on. We only saw TWO humpback whales the whole 10 hours. Unheard of :(

172) Ruddy Turnstone - 4 September

Quite by accident I noticed a bird flying over with what looked like a black throat band from afar, but a back/wing pattern like a Black Turnstone. Ruddy's usually take some work for me to find, so I was pleased this one came to me.

173) Wandering Tattler

A new life bird for me! Rather enjoyed is peculiar foraging behavior. For anyone curious, this brings me to 194 on the year in eBird. Still looking to mop up some missed shots of earlier sightings. Headed to Lake Tahoe next week, and should have good opportunity for about 10 new species on the year (incidental sightings are the order of the day).

As I see the wonderful names given to birds in the New World I can't help feeling that whoever named our Old World birds lacked imagination

Well it was done a few centuries earlier and we do have some that have been refined for politeness sake such as Wheatear!:)

Scope for an off topic thread for the daftest.

Oops manners. forgot to say well done to Clare's Tatler.

Did not manage to get near as many as I'd hoped on our short vacation. Nearly every bird that was new was spotted from the porch of our rental house.

Yes, that is the only picture I have :( Luckily, the punk rock mohawk red crest is diagnostic.

179) Mute Swan - 24 Sept (Oakland, CA)

Apologies for the terrible photo. I'd seen something that I thought was a swan on the way past going to Tahoe, but couldn't ID. This time, I was ready when we passed in going 75 mph in the opposite direction!

very nice additions - the pileated woodpecker and the mute swans have got to be top contenders for this year's EBC award. is the mute swan at the top left corner?

And the stellar's jay is very pretty.

I love the Steller's Jays! They actually look slightly different where I grew up in Colorado, so I was surprised to see the blue streaks on the crest in this population.

The swan is almost exactly in the middle top to bottom, to the far left. Just the white sorta-swan-shaped blur.

Oh it's there alright. Dead center but whether it is a MCkilvray's Warbler or a "Whohe" I would not care to say.

Certainly those taking part in EBC of the year have severe competition.

I basically just pointed where I could see movement and hoped I got it. Had to positively ID when I got home with the zoom function.P1460201.JPG.04c81f761e6d765eb593ff7f25445ecb.JPG
