74) Song Sparrow - 20 Jan

Played hide-and-seek with this fellow for quite a few minutes trying to capture him in a good spot through the fenceposts.

86) Brown Booby - 31 Jan

Here's one that brought a lot of excitement with her! Happily, she stayed around for a few weeks to give everyone the chance to get a good look.

Just minding her own business looking fabulous when a sea lion comes and threatens her.

I'll threaten to skewer him with my beak!

Maybe the dragon pose will work?

Looking askance at the interloper who ultimately won the spot.

There's my January! The goal was 100 in the first month, so I met that. Unfortunately, no pics of the following sightings (yet!). Those with an asterisk are ones I'll almost certainly not be able to photograph this year given my travel schedule (or lack thereof).

Black Vulture*

Bald Eagle*

Blue Jay*

Red-bellied Woodpecker*

Carolina Chickadee*

European Starling

California Quail (actually saw these today, but they're too fast for me!)

Common Raven (saw these today, but driving :( )

Whimbrel

Herring Gull

Ancient Murrelet

California Towhee

Snowy Egret

Rock Pigeon

White-tailed Kite

Total for January: 107!

Impressive haul for the first month. I look at the pictures and wonder why one is called a (Common) Murre and the other is a (Pigeon) Guillemot?  The latter looks identical to what's called a Black Guillemot in Europe too.

Come on Dave. We all know our cousins like to be different!:o

But seriously 'our' Guillemots are 'Uria' and our Tystie is "Cepphus grylla" and not really a Guillemot at all.

It does occur in North America too. Pigeon Gillies (Cephus columba) are a bird of the west coast but I don't know if columba arose out of it being a Pigeon Guillemot or if Pigeon came about because of 'columba'.

Don't even look at Puffins and Auks.;)

Excellent total for January. Really interesting birds, some familiar and most not!

I didn’t know the Fulmar has a dark morph - I have only seen the pale one.
