I wasn't expecting to find this one where I did last weekend, rather I was hoping to maybe get one on our trip to Western Australia.  But hey, I'll take it.

Great stuff here Sharon, it strikes me that anyone who wants to break the world record for sightings in a given year HAS to visit Australia. I see so many of your shots of birds I recognise only to see they have a different name. The warden at our local RSPB reserve packed it in and set off around the world about 12 years ago and broke the then world record which stood at around 4000 + ( makes our BY efforts look a bit tame!) and it included Australia. He built on the fame he and his partner achieved in doing so and now they run their own birding tour company which is more fun and more lucrative than working for the RSPB too!

Not sure where the record stands now, somewhere nearer to 7000 and getting near impossible to beat too unless you have extremely deep pockets.

@Dave Williams I can’t disagree with you there. We do have a pretty amazing assemblage of feathered friends.  Unfortunately time is an issue for me at the moment but I hope to be able to share some more soon

Down Under is the place to be for birding ... but it is only reserved to Aussies. Thank you Sharon for sharing those beautiful birds with us.

My parents are visiting at the moment and as a treat I took them on a trip to Bare Sand Island, about 1.5 hours by boat from Darwin which scored me a tick I would not usually get.

Bare Sand Island

Can we assume that as Aussie names are often quite literal that Bare Sand Island is exactly that? :P

@Soukousas tempted as I am to tell you that the name comes from people going bare in the sand, I will admit that yes, the name is pretty self explanatory.

The real reason to visit Bare Sand Island though is that it is a reliable nesting beach for flatback turtles - a species of sea turtle that only breeds in Australia and is only found in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

What a relief. The thought of going there with ones parents if the other applied quite put one off one's breakfast.

Nice pics.
