I´ll blame the quality of this afternoon only on you Peter. ;):P

It's always good to have someone at hand to put the blame on, I do that regularly myself :P. In spite of that, I completely agree: both Jeannette and myself thoroughly enjoyed our outings with both of you and the tablecloth-billed dinner!

255/E255.) Tawny Pipit (Anthus campestris) / Brachpieper.

Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António. Pf, I should get extra points for writing this incredibly long and complicated name. Unfortunately Peter was not with us us for this so I have noone but myself to blame for this "photo". But on second thought, I´ll just blame @AndMic. B)

256/E256.) Lesser Short-Toed Lark (Calandrella rufescens) / Stummellerche

Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António. I feel tired now after writing this. Again. ;) So what´s the best thing one can do on the very last day of holiday when being in sunny and beautiful Portugal, with a lot of beaches and stunning places everywhere? Only one thing - go looking for a very drab and boring-looking Lark! Naturally Andreas was immensely delighted about this choice of activity.

An afternoon of disaster, of course I took a wrong turn, ended up on the motorway and had to go back almost 40 kms before the next exit. And then back. And I really should not go on the motorway a day before flying home - the Algarve has this bafflingly complicated toll system where it´s practically impossible to pay on your last days of holiday. (If the car is not equipped with a transponder you can only pay at a post office - but only two days after driving on the motorway. Very practical.) So unfortunately I can never return to Portugal because I´m afraid I will be arrested for not paying that *%8&"$/( toll!

I was so angry with myself that I almost wanted to drive back immediately. And then of course I just could not find my target bird. But it´s a good thing I can be really, really stubborn. So just walked the whole area again - and then success. A few slight "drrrrs" in the low vegetation, and then I knew I had cornered my lifer Larks. They could run, they could fly, they could hide - but there would be no escape, I would get them. Get them I did, and my birder heart jubilated!

When exactly did I become such a weird person, I wonder? :D

257/E257.) Iberian Magpie (Cyanopica cook) / Blauelster

Ria Formosa. A common bird in Portugal but not very approachable. Except here on the golf course where they were pretty tame.

And that concludes the Portugal trip - a really nice holiday. Lovely weather, beautiful places, good birding, sumptous food - nothing to complain about. And of course it was great meeting with no less than three Safaritalkers - I really love the community @Game Wardenhas built here in the last 15 years.

Some final pictures from the Fuseta area:

I really enjoyed reading about your Portugal trip and seeing the many wonderful photos! And an impressive number of species, certainly more than we managed to see on our ( much longer) travels in Spain and Portugal.

No, that´s not it. It´s called "Casa De Pasto Do Carmo", in Quelfes.

Great trip.

I have only been once MANY years ago. Allegedly convalescing so hired a Mini Cooper. Stayed in Monte Gordo so know Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António. It was in its infancy back then and a knock on the door of the small museum gained us entry. The guide/curator showed us around, speaking no English whatsoever, and was so keen to impress he gave us the jaw bone of some unknown small mammal as an illegal souvenier.

We still have it. No idea what is is so it goes by the name of 'jaw of unknown rat' in my cupboard. I have waited Forty years to tell this story to the world and salve my conscience. So happy!:D

Good check list. I had number one of your four unnamed birds as Temmincks Stint but your checklist suggests Little.

The other three are, I think, Curlew Sandpiper, BW Stilt juv and Sanderling.

The hill Cabranosa has quite a good reputation for birds of prey - at least that´s what the books say. But that spot turned out to be quite disappointing. The number of birds of prey is very low compared to the hotspots in Spain, mostly juveniles who don´t know the right route yet and wander too far West. And the few birds we saw were just specks high up in the sky. We spent about six hours on the hill over two days but nothing really exciting ever happened unfortunately. Except some well-earned ebcs.:)

Last year I went there a few times and that´s also my impression, a bit disappointing, most birds pass to high and less species than I expected.

Hm, you know I considered that but then rejected the idea because of leg colour and the not very demarcated breast. But the legs could just be dirty? I was not quite happy with Little Stint either - any more opinions on this bird? These two are quite tricky in their non-breeding state.

Yes they are! I still feel this is a Little Stint. The legs could be muddy indeed, but all the way up to the body seems a little too much. Also the back of a Temminck’s in my view is ‘smoother’ than the pattern on your bird. And, though not too clearly, the supercilium  seems to extend beyond the eye. Just my two cents….

I must admit that I had missed the leg colours and thought they were just shiney wet look. My nthughts on Temminck's was distribution and the Greater Coverts being quite distinctive and large.

But who knows?

I'll stick with Little then - thanks Peter and Fred. Darn - where to get a new click now?
