As far as I know, this is the only local place that is reliable for Avocet, so we missed seeing them last year. A real treat to catch them before they head off.

As you say, 'always a treat to get a Water Rail, and I would add Hobby too.

You are not the only one ^_^. Maybe this is not a Big Year but a Slow Year :D?!

Yet they are nice photos and you have been out ... what else one needs!!

Ooh! A Snipe. I've not managed to find one yet. Nice shots.

Interesting to see that most of us UK Big Year players are all creeping along at pretty much the same rate. Slowly

Very nice open sighting of that Snipe! And you used the opportunity to very good effect too.

Terrific Snipe shots, easy to miss amongst the reeds. Ive only ever seen one here and I think the Guides said they were very shy, yours look quite bold. Yes the Godwit looks quite delicate amongst the other waterbirds

Thank you for the kind comments. Progress is slow, but we did go to Poole in Dorset (South West England) for a few days towards the end of October.

The weather was pretty bad for the first few days - windy and often wet. But it was nice to see the sea and visit some very good fish restaurants!

I will post the additions in two blocks

I think I have only seen them in breeding plumage before so was pleased to be able to pick them out from the more numerous Black-headed Gulls

We started taking some photos when they were very distant, then tried a closer places and they seemed completely unbothered by us. Then we sat on the pebbles and waited. Some of them walked closer and close to us until eventually they were to close to photograph!

I think this only the second time we have seen these in the UK. There were three of them but the third was much further away.

A duplicate, the "cousin" of the bird above. Much more common and seen regularly - but nice light I thought

Brownsea Island is in Poole Harbour, partly run by the local Wildlife Trust and partly by the National Trust. It is reached by a 20 minute ferry trip.

As well as the birds, it is one of the last strongholds in England of
