Alex & Zvezda's Big Year 2021: Version 6.0 Limited Edition

An extraordinary guest is visiting Slovenia, and we have had to see it!

It is the 1st ever reported sighting of this bird in Slovenia, and only the 5th in the Western Palearctic area. This bird came from Far East, where it nests in northeast of China and in Japan, wintering in Southeast Asia.

Why it came all the way to Slovenia?! My theory (completely unproven) is that it must be from Japan, and wanted to see the country where so many (per capita) olympic medalists are living :P.

What a great bird to see in Slovenia and beautifully captured by Zvezda! I have no doubt your theory about its appearance is correct, so I do look forward to seeing it here shortly ;)

It is just a short flight to Slovenia! But act quickly as the situation is worsening :(.

Unfortunately yes, again. Our vaccination rate is at 40%, (2 shots, whole population) and is almost at standstill. With 1st shot 45% so very much along my spring prediction that we will be at 50% ... end of the year.

Off topic I know but is this failure due to supply problems, poor organisation or public resistance?

Mostly public resistance which was caused by supply problems (AZ) and poor organisation. We were united in spring of 2020, have dropped the ball in autumn of 2020 and are now harshly divided between pro and anti.

That doesn't sound very promising, Alex. Sad to hear that.

Sad to hear indeed. A very good friend's sister (a medical professional and wife of a pharmacist) recently passed away. So unnecessary.

To the three amazing Slovenians:  well done on your 50, 100 and 100+ birds! May the sun always be where you want it to be!

beautiful shots of the grey-headed lapwing in lovely plumage. also uncommonly seen in Singapore as well but not in that pretty plumage as yours is.

Slovenia is on our "green list" Alex. Bit late now though.

what a gorgeous Lapwing, worth a trip out for sure. Watching Europes Covid management closely, we're still at the "arguing about everything" stage.

The summer is over and we are back to (slow) birding. On our way to Prekmurje we have stopped at Rački ribniki looking for migrant water birds. And we were not disappointed.
