Zimbabwe & Malawi 2019

NSY

Recommended Posts

Today we have a full lazy day breakfast, lunch and dinner

There is wildlife here but not to the same extent as NP lodges. We see Baboons, Monkeys, Hippos, Fish Eagles, Hammerkop, Trumpeter hornbills, Livingstone’s flycatcher etc.

7 species of bird Identified

We go on a sunset cruise on an old sailing dow onto Lake Malawi. We see the local fishermen going out to night fish. They have boats varying from a one man canoe to a boat with about 20 guys crowded on with lots on nets. The whole village seem to be on the beach preparing for fishing. Just along the shore there are hippos in the water.  IMG_9384.JPG.f7a37dc29dfba22c522ef6f3c13a483a.JPG

Our boat awaits

We are transferred to Monkey bay airstrip in the oldest, most knackered Land Cruiser ever seen. The seat belts are missing and my side door is wired shut but still open 2in. The drive is through 3 very dilapidated villages with lots of stalls selling not a lot. The Car & village life makes it a very interesting drive.  At the airstrip we wait for plane at 10.30am, it is the same Cessna 4 seater as on last flight. Two Belgium guys are already on flight then it is just us and the pilot. It is a scenic 40min flight to Lilongwe. Then we transfer to South African Airways 737 for 2.5 hour flight to Johannesburg.   We have beer & chips in café.  Again the food is much better on South African than BA.

Then back to UK on BA A380 a great plane I will miss if not returned to service.  The upper floor economy has a real feeling of space.

We did have a trip booked for April 2020 moved to April 2021 now Oct 2021 but will that even run?

Bye for now.

Next posting Madagascar or Botswana or maybe Tanzania
