An amazing number of beautiful additions again and, of course, excellent photos. That Tiger Shrike has quite a bill for its size.

Thanks all!

There is a small island off the eastern side that is relatively undeveloped. it's probably the last few islands allowed to retain secondary forests and these forests generally house quite a few bird migrants and residents. But birders generally visit it for the shorebirds which often gather in the distant sandbars that can be seen from a boardwalk.

In recent months, however, quite a handful of forest rarities were discovered to the joy of the birding and photographing communities. there were a number of stakeouts (yea us too, especially Herman, sitting under the sun and just waiting for them to appear sometimes for 2 minutes, sometimes for half an hour), and these stakeouts produced surprising results. we think these rarities could be flying across the Straits of Singapore from nearby Johor (southern state of Malaysia) which is fast clearing its own forests and mangroves. Lucky for us, but a terrible state for the birds.

260/SG161. Black and White Bulbul , Pulau Ubin

A very rare nonbreeding visitor, and a species on the near threatened rank on the Birdlife list. terrible light on this one

263/SG164. Black-winged Flycatcher-Shrike, Pulau Ubin

there was a pair and they gave very good viewings the morning we were there, returning to their favourite perch which fortunately were in front of all of us there. A very rare visitor to our shores

264/SG165. Lesser Green Leafbird, Pulau Ubin

Even rarer resident than the Greater Green Leafbird in Singapore, news that the lesser cousin was seen brought out even the most veteran of birders. this species is on the near threatened list of IUCN Redlist

so rare that I have put more than just one shot of it....

Exciting to see and photograph such rarities, even though the cause of their appearance is worrying.

Right, i'm adding the last bits before we head out on Friday to get to see birds from a new continent!

267/SG168. Red-crowned Barbet, Dairy Farm Nature Park

tough to see the male barbet, but what a riot of colours when it appears (in the right light conditions).

268/SG169. Light-vented Bulbul, Changi Bay

A species that is not distributed in our island so we suspect this may be an escapee. But unabashedly, I'm adding to our count of course. It was very coy and stayed within the security of a restricted area (hence the barbed wires!) but just for a couple of seconds it couldn't resist a fruiting tree.
