Beautiful birds, the Black and Yellow Broadbill is my favourite and the Rufous-backed Kingfisher a close second.

Some stunning birds from your trip to Malaysia. The two kingfishers at the end are really beautiful!

Hard to pick 'winners' but I agree with this.

A brilliant way to end your series. I agree on the beauty of the kingfishers, but also the Broadbills and Trogon stood out! Even taking into account the dark conditions for may of the forest birds, Herman managed quite a few excellent shots!

On to Lenggor, another strip of forest in Johor, two hours' drive from the border controls. We saw a ginormous Great Slaty Woodpecker - the world's largest woodpecker specis - along the main road, but it moved too fast for us to take a shot. I counted this in my Cambodian list in Feb, but this particular one looked larger than those I saw then.

In late August, I managed to wrangle two places on a houseboat on one of two annual expeditions to the Belum-Temengor nature park in Kedah, Malaysia. the dam reservoir is part of an entire complex that stretches in southern Thailand, and is believed to house one of the oldest rainforests in the world of over 130m years old. Because the valleys are all flooded, the boats are able to get closer to the trees on the hilltops. you can see the Rafflesia in this ancient forest but there are no trails whatsover, so you 'll need to  hack your way through. Elephants can be seen.  Last year, the expendition saw a herd playing at the water's edge. But the Malaysian guides are promoting this lake to be the Hornbill capital of the world. In late August and early September, some of the hornbill species fly into and across the Belum rainforest from Thailand, and if you are very lucky, you will get to see all 10 species of hornbills. We weren't so lucky, but we did managed to see six species. still counted as a success! Other than that,  it is a challenge to find other bird species since we were not able to land on the shores.

394/MY44. Large Green Pigeon, Belum
