Family Group

Photographed at 9:45 am on 3 May, 2015 in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 1600, 1/1250 sec., f/10, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

*****************************************************************************************************

The most unexpected sighting of the game drive was a mother cheetah and her two cubs. Anthony didn't recognize her. They were resting in a far corner of the reserve, apart from other cheetah sightings.

The cubs were well-trained, remaining alert, looking around, never straying too far from their mother. We remained with them for over half an hour, enjoying watching their family dynamics.

Cheetah in Pursuit

Photographed on 4 October, 2015 at 6:40 pm in Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 200mm f/2.8L II telephoto lens.

ISO 125, 1/80 sec., f/2.8, 200mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

****************************************************************************************************

~ This pair of images is taken from my Leopard Hills trip report. They're posted here in order to share them with those who might be interested.

The brief, wholly unexpected sight of a cheetah in full pursuit of an impala determined to save its life was one of the most exhilarating sights on any game drive.

Post-Hunt Cheetah

Photographed on 4 October, 2015 at 6:44 pm in Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 200mm f/2.8L II telephoto lens.

ISO 320, 1/250 sec., f/2.8, 200mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

****************************************************************************************************

~ After the cheetah finished the chase with the impala running off to join a small herd, the cheetah sat down to reconnoiter the territory, scanning the area for both opportunities and potential threats.

As ever the intensely warm chestnut hue of cheetah eyes impressed me. To sit relatively near such a magnificent animal in the wild is one of the greatest joys of being out on a safari game drive.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya -- Feb 2014

With the cats, I love to do face-shots mainly because I can see a lot of personality in them, being a crazy cat lady and all. This one looks so stoic to me. The closed mouth and calmness about her make me feel like she's unstressed and not pre- or post-hunt.
