Lion in the Grass

Photographed on 4 February, 2016 at 5:25 pm in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya, with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 200, f/2.8, 1/1600 sec., 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

~ There are times when a subject compels one to push the shutter through sheer force of personality. This lion looked so soulfully that I kept clicking the shutter despite it being motionless.

What I especially liked were the grass heads bending in the light breeze. The experience at Porini Lion featured lions in the lushest green grass, epitomizing Masa Mara's rich ecosystem.

Ruaha National Park a real lion park, this group of lions where around 15 and they took down a girafe while it was giving birth, you can se tha small one still inside! I think that the female giraffe had problem delivering and maybe the calf was allready dead and the female had an internal infection.

The Lions in Ruaha often takes giraffes and even young elephants.

Pic taken 3 days ago.

~ The morning game drive began by checking out a report of an overnight lion kill of an adult African buffalo. When we found the kill, this male lion was dining on it with other lions nearby.

The light was such that his mane was highlighted. The vivid intensity of his eye made a strong impression — I repeatedly pushed the shutter button. Such a fine sighting set a high standard for the entire day.

Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Maasai Mara, Kenya -- February 2014

Two young brothers, I had them all to myself one night as the sun went down. We followed them until we couldn't see them any longer due to darkness. Coincidentally, I had this photo on my iPhone case for the safari I was just on (Feb 2016) and the guides recognized them and confirmed they are still alive.

Probably my favorite of any shot I've taken. I had an entire pride line up at the watering hole, but this little guy stood out.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania -- Feb 2013

This was the first ever large pride I saw in the wild. I remember being completely overcome with joy.

Ndutu, Tanzania -- Feb 2013

Despite having very full bellies, these two girls couldn't help but watch the parade of wildebeest passing right near them. It's that look that tells you that they're not wholly non-committal.

Ha! @@Big Andy, I had to go back to my trip report to confirm, but it was 21!!

The colors on that cub photo were a total accident. I'd been playing with the "Sunrise" setting on the camera and forgot to take it off when that pride approached us. That was the (unfortunate?) result. I've since tinkered with it in various photo editors to see if I can get the cub back to a more natural yellow/brown!
