Simba and Mufasa share a moment

"Look, Simba, everything the light touches is our kingdom. A king's time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, Simba, the sun will set on my time here, and will rise with you as the new king,"
Mufasa tells Simba in the famous scene from "The Lion King"

Central Kalahari, Botswana.

In the vicinity of Deception Valley Lodge

We cut short our evening game drive and rushed back because lions had arrived to drink at the lodge waterhole. No problem for us as we weren't seeing much else anyway

We found a fine looking young male and 3 lionesses.

We didn't have the best spotlight in the world, but I managed to get something.

Then, on our way to the airstrip the next morning we found them again, lying by a kill they'd made the night before.

At day's end, the light growing dim, what must a lion think after a long day of portraits by safari guests?

Night falling, lions begin thinking of food. For other animals, not a time to be heedlessly gamboling about.

An outline lion. I spent the whole afternoon with guide and tracker unsuccessfully looking for a specific leopard. On the way back to the lodge a pride of 8 lions came out of the bush and settled on the warm road. An approaching vehicle provided just enough backlight. One of my favourite images - ever.

Nikon D500, 80-400mm lens@240mm, 1/320sec, f/5.3, ISO12800 (gulp). There is not too much noise to see as most of the image is black :). More seriously this was the first trip where I have used full manual with auto ISO. All was generally well provided I remembered to adjust the maximum ISO when the light got really poor.

Just returned from a few days in the Timbavati. Spent time with a group of very chilled 3 month old cubs:

Nikon D500, 80-400mm lens @360mm, f/5.6, 1/320sec, ISO 6400.

I do like how the Nikon and Lightroom together handle high ISO (and a lot cheaper than faster glass :))

Normally I strive for as much detail as possible in my wildlife shots. On this occasion although the original is very well defined I was playing in Lightroom and rather liked this result which tends to bring attention to the eyes. Just for a change...

Not the best photos, but the lion itself is unusual. Taken on the S41 in Kruger National Park on the 20th december 2018. He is part of the Shishangaan-pride. I haven´t been able to really get his age confirmed, some say he is 5 years, but to me he seems around 3 years. We got a tip about a white lion hiding in the bushes, so we waited for 2 hours for him to finally emerge. Great sighting.DSCN0780_2JPG.jpg.0d91b9edc9e318dc89172c4b13450d1a.jpg1827223148_DSCN07652.jpg.8e89d177fd157041a1aa24fed1cd4caf.jpg
