We tracked it down due to the smell - it hit us about 100 yards away, we followed the smell then found this. Not very pleasant!

Was there something amiss in the ecosystem of that area?

Where were the vultures/hyenas/jackals?

the area was basically a birding reserve in SA where there was a bit of general game about e.g.impala, the odd zebra and wilde, giraffe but no predators. There may have been jackal around but we didn't see any, and certainly no brown or spotted hyena. The local area had a 'vulture restaurant' for the tourists, so we rarely saw these scavangers on the game reserves. So, when this poor wilde karked it, the flies got in on the act!
