Kirk's Dik-dik (Madoqua kirkii): both images taken in Tsavo West, Kenya; July 2012.
This tiny wee antelope is monogamous and has acquired a reputation for partner fidelity which is almost unique amongst antelope. I must admit that I was skeptical of this claim but surprisingly it stands up to scientific scrutiny: http://www.ncbi.nlm....les/PMC1688408/
-I suspect that these stats for Dik-dik are higher than in most human societies!

Here be Monsters!

5867738312_2424eca2ee_o.jpg

I thought I had seen it all in the excellent footage of such classic documentaries as Planet Earth but in truth nothing can prepare you for the sight of one of the Mara crocs in action up close.

Lets face it, as tourists we are perched on the bank of the Mara river hoping for a river crossing and secretly wishing to see a croc attack. This is nature pornography which caters for our darker side!

The reality is a totally different experience. Numerous animals crossing and re-crossing the river creates a complacency in the wildebeest and voyeur alike and so when the attack occurs it is never anticipated but is brutally swift and expertly executed.

On this day the Wildebeest were crossing on a broad front and this yearling calf was simply one of many that attracted no real interest amongst the khaki-clad audience. The explosive eruption of water and foam signalled the sudden violent end to this poor calf's life as massive jaws engulfed and crushed what was a sizeable animal. This huge croc had appeared from nowhere and with a lightening strike crushed the poor yearling into a stunned paralysis before sinking under the surface to drown its catch. The whole episode lasted a mere two seconds and I was only able to snatch a few images even though this action took place immediately in front of us.

This was not a feel good experience!
