A BIF of a different kind:

the lodge we stayed at in Marloth Park near Crocodile Bridge, Kruger, put out banana to attract the bush babies and these guys, Peter's Epaulated Fruit Bat. It gave my E-620, 50-200 and FL50R a good work out. I had many misses, any advice for shooting wildlife in the dark would be appreciated. The biggest problems I have are, the lens hunting lots and when I do lock on, sometimes when I press the shutter it seems to default to a long exposure, despite the flash being fully charged? I variously tried Aperture mode, and Auto, and also prefocusing on a beam at roughly the same distance that the bats were flying around. I also tried Manual focus and S-AF + MF but I think in the end, S-AF and a lot of luck got me this shot. :)

Taken at Ngorongoro crater using a 450D with a 55-250mm lens. I stuck it into sports mode as I didn't trust myself to not screw up.

I'll stick the full sequence and a TR up when I get a chance. It'll probably have to wait until I reach India as the internet here is honking and I've got a few days in Kruger.

Tree-climbing lioness of the Katuma Pride, enjoying sunset over the Kitasunga Plains - Katavi National Park, Tanzania, August 2013

Although Katavi is not associated with tree-climbing lions, the lionesses of the Katuma pride could effortlessly climb to the higher branches of trees. At one stage we had three lionesses in the same tree, on different branches.

This female from the Chada Pride had her eyes focussed on the young passenger in our vehicle. We had to reposition the vehicle for security reasons, after taking a few photos of course :D (more about this incident to come in my trip report) - Katavi National Park, Tanzania, August 2013

Nice! Whereabouts in Kruger?

On H10 just outside Lower Sabie. I'd seen it sleeping in a tree earlier in the day. It climbed down then crossed the road in front of us.

It's the 1st time I've had a clear close range sighting of a leopard so I'm very happy :)

Couple of photos from Zimbabwe.

Dehorned white rhino in Matobo National Park. It had just be removed, hence the paint on her backside. Our guide said she was still fairly groggy from the drugs.

Elephant super herd in Hwange NP. One of the girls in my group counted 70 elephants before getting half way through the herd. The photo was taken a few days after the cyanide attack.
