Wow, awesome! How close were you?

Thanks @@ZaminOz - we were about 15-20 metres away and the eagle was quite relaxed sitting at edge of the bank. There was good light and I took the photo at an angle where the background was just water from the river, so the bokeh worked out well. I could have taken it at a lower angle, closer to the ground, but would have got the opposite bank in the background.

Thanks @@Game Warden - the last 2 photos are from Day 4 in Katavi (the current day in my trip report) but I thought I'd leave them out of the trip report to keep this thread going. I took too many photos that day, so I'll splitting them between this thread and my trip report (which should continue this evening).

 

The late afternoons in Katavi have a consistent magical light (something not evident at the other destinations I visited, including Serengeti), so you can't really go wrong.

A monster female African Crowned Eagle with her Bushbuck prey; Langata Forest, Nairobi National Park, Kenya; August 2013.

(Though she looks like a possessed demon, the "dark eye" is due to her nictitating membrane (a kind of horizontal third eyelid)). This is the only raptor I have ever met that has made me feel apprehensive on closer approach.

Yes and no.

Initially I thought the prey was a Suni but the size and pelage colour was wrong. I then thought it might be a Harvey's (Red) Duiker but again it doesn't fit.

Will Knocker of Silole Sanctuary who leads guided trips in Nairobi National Park examined the images and advised that it was a young Bushbuck and not a Duiker. The size and shape of the head; ear size, shape and colour and facial markings are all typical of Bushbuck. Will advised that Bushbuck are very common in Langata Forest.

Since this topic is open to wildlife from all over, this is a brown bear from a remote camping trip in Alaska. The trip didn't turn out so well but I did get a few pics of the bears fishing for salmon. We were delayed 1.5 days getting in to the camping spot because of high winds (60-70mph) and the float planes would not fly. Then we had 1.5 days of shooting before the winds picked back up. Most of the tents blew down and there were 12 of us hunkered down in the two guide's tents for 1.5 days before the winds calmed enough for the planes to fly again.

 

The salmon were completely red at this time and place and we could see where they were swimming because there was a solid stream of red as you can see in the second picture.

"Mass Gathering" This is an insignificant snapshot of more than 200, 000 animals gathering at Crossing Point 4 of the Mara River. This photo was taken at around 6:45am. Only a aerial photo could really capture this phenomenal event, which was quite unusual for August. This mass movement was triggered by rains on the Masai Mara side of the border - Northern Serengeti, Tanzania, August 2013.
