While waiting for the morning game drive to begin, I noticed this Black-capped Social-Weaver flying from branch to branch near the Samburu Sopa Lodge entrance.

A stalk of grass in its translucent bill suggested nest-building might be underway. This social-weaver species is an easily viewed resident throughout Samburu National Reserve.

Mara Weaver Nests

Photographed at 9:45 am on 7 February, 2014 in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 200, 1/1250 sec., f/2.8, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

These weavers were building nests in palms growing around a little-known hippo pool within Masai Mara. Their activity level was impressive during the half hour that we observed them.

The richly green fresh vegetation they were using contrasted with older nests. The image doesn't convey the raucous chattering of the weavers as they worked.
