During one of my wanders along Tigertail Beach (SW Florida), I found a juvenile Roseate Spoonbill sharing a tree-root perch with a very handsome Tricolor Heron on the lagoon side of the spit. To get the light on my back necessitated a wade out into the lagoon and 30 min's with the mozzies:

A few more picture of these two, plus some other spoonbills - there were more in the lagoon this year than I have seen previously, and there was a chap from the Audubon Society on the beach most mornings monitoring them.

@@Whyone?

Beautiful photos - and worth the effort to get that quality of light

There's no means of giving your Tigertail Beach posting a ‘SUPER-Like’, thus I'd like to tell you that your images are sensational!

Clear, vibrant, loaded with detail. The colors of the Roseate Spoonbill are intense.

Is Tigertail Beach on a Gulf of Mexico barrier island?

Your careful positioning yourself for an optimal position yielded images which I highly admire.

Thank you so much for sharing them on Safaritalk.

@@michael-ibk, @@TonyQ.....thank you for taking the time to look at and comment on my photo's.

@@Tom Kellie....what can I say, you really are too kind!!!! Yes, Tigertail Beach is on the Gulf of Mexico, though in itself, not a barrier island - it is a long spit to the north of Marco Island, part of the 10,000 Islands area of SW florida. It is a wonderful place to walk - a recognised and protected bird sanctuary. Having both the Gulf and lagoon gives a rich variety of birds (not to mention dolphin and Manatee). I will post a few photos of some of the less flamboyant birds to be found here when I return from Venice (off in an hour or so!)

Thank you for the helpful clarification.

I've never visited Florida, aside from three hours driving through the northwestern Panhandle.

Even less flamboyant birds would be a welcome post!

Venice? Enjoy!

@@Whyone? those mosquito bites were sure worth it. Another great series of photos. The Roseate Spoonbill is such a cool bird and you captured it well. If you ever find yourself in Florida in the spring time, the rookery in St Augustine is worth a day or two. You can get really close to birds like these plus storks and egrets.

Hi Alan @@Atdahl.

Thank you for your kind comments and the St. Augustine recommendation. I have a good friend whose son is at college there - he says it is an interesting town to visit from a historical perspective (the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the US?) so maybe a little bit of history and lots of birds will be enough to get me there one day!

Spoonbills are my favourite bird! We recently bought a statue of one for the garden. :)

@@kittykat23uk. I know what you mean. They are fascinating to look at.

@@Whyone?. You are welcome. While we aren't that big into towns and culture (it gets in the way of wildlife watching), I have to agree that St Augustine was really cool besides the rookery at the Alligator Farm. Their "downtown" is great and we took a boat tour out into the bay which was nice as well. And, if you are into golf the World Golf Hall of Fame is there. It's definitely worth a visit in my book.
