Orang Utan (Sabah, Borneo)

I have been working in Malaysia most of this year and recently took the opportunity to leave Peninsular Malaysia for a couple of weeks in Borneo (Sabah).

 

The main objective was to see Orang Utan's in the wild and we were very fortunate in this regard, seeing 8 different individuals in 5 separate sightings. Whilst all were special, most of the Orang's were high in the canopy and well beyond my ability to photograph. Actually, this went for most of the animals we saw in Borneo - long hot treks in the humid rainforest yielded some great sightings, but so often in deep shade and / or backlit.

 

This female Oran Utan was with a youngster, feeding happily in a wild Rambutan tree near Gamantong caves. Whilst in deep shade, these are the best photo's I managed of these gentle, charismatic creatures.

@@Whyone? Beautiful, I think you did great with these! Where did you stay and how did you arrange the stay and the treks?

We split our time between Sukau Rainforest Lodge on the Kinabatangan river and Tabin Rainforest Lodge.

 

We saw Orang Utan's at both, but the ones above where near Gamantong caves - this was a stop we made transferring between Sukau and Tabin. We saw 2 groups of Orang Utan's here, and Red Leaf Monkeys which are tremendous!
