40. Burchell's Coucal, Tembe Elephant Park. July

Named for William John Burchell (1781-1863) an English explorer-naturalist who went to the Cape of Good Hope in 1810 and travelled extensively in the interior between 1811-1815. He published a 2 volume work, Travels in the interior of Southern Africa in 1822/24 and was the first person to describe the white rhinocerus. In 1825 he travelled to Brazil via Lisbon, spending 5 years collecting in South America. He returned to England in 1830 and became increasingly reclusive. Burchell became seriously ill in his last 2 years and eventually took his own life.
