Thanks for this trip report @madaboutcheetah - great photos as usual and it looks like you had good fortune and good guiding.

 

In-camp testing sounds very nice versus spending a night or two in Lusaka at the end of the safari.  That is definitely how I will roll next time in Zambia.

Thanks for sharing -- any luck with rhinos in Northern Luangwa?  Was just watching a BBC special on the rhinos there --- your photos are amazing and the wild dogs look to be in excellent condition!

@gatoratlarge.... thanks... no we didn’t see rhino although I think they are more towards Mwaleshi.

I count 8 pups.  Did they all make it into the shot or were there stragglers?

Were the leopard cubs by any chance Olimba's cubs? Saw her in Nsefu in August and both the Leopard Legacy filmmakers as well as my guide had seen the cubs earlier in the day. Went to the brush and tree where they were last spotted but we figured they were too well hidden. So no cub sighting. And appears to be the same pack of dogs I saw in virtually the same location close to the den. Amazing shots in an amazing place. Hoping to return. I had stayed at Nsefu and like the guides and staff. So probably would return.

@Africalover- You are much too kind!!  Thanks a lot and I loved your recent images in the Tanzania TR very much!

@nsoltz- Yes, those are Olimba's cubs.  Unfortunately, she lost the male cub towards the end of the season.  She is now left with one.  True - look forward to Will and Leanne's next film of Olimba.  They were there in September plus the BBC crew with the wild dogs.

@LarsS- you are right - that ele did have it's trunk missing ....... Possibly had an issue with a snare at some point?

Oh it did? I just convinced (or maybe assured) myself it was an optical illusion. In that case it's a sad story behind the photograph, but also a good one to tell and share. Hopefully it doesn't bother the ellie too much

You and me both @LarsS. Alfala the resident ele at Bua River Lodge in Nkhotakota NP Malawi, has also been the victim of a snare but in his case the damage was much closer to the tip.  He seemed to manage without too much difficulty.
