27/ 298 White-breasted Cormorant ( Phalacrocorax lucidus - Witborstaalscholver ) Akagera NP Lake Ihema 10th of December 2023 :

The  taxonomic status of the white-breasted cormorant has been under discussion for some decades : sometimes treated as a subspecies of the great cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo lucidus, some authorities retain its original treatment as an allospecies in the P. carbo superspecific group, in which case it is referred to as "Phalacrocorax lucidus".

As its name suggests, the 80–100 centimetres  long white-breasted cormorant has a white neck and breast when adult, and the white area tends to increase as the bird becomes more mature.

We saw a lot of them !

In Michelin stars we would rate this one three : worth the trip and it is the one for my third century !! It took us a while , almost unbearingly long to have the first view on the 12th ; heard him a few times in the papyrus close to Ruzizi lodge but it is a bird that makes you work to see him a bit like the Golden Oriole in May this year

The second view was on a boat trip on the 15th at much closer range and again my heart was beating faster  a birders life can be heaven :);

Another new one I didn't see in Kenya , fairly common in the eastern savanna areas of Rwanda but usually its numbers decrease from November onwards dependent on the amount of rainfall
