Hi Sangeeta, my advice is patience and anticipation. I too wanted a picture like this for a long time, most of my early attempts missed capturing it. I was lucky with this picture because the roller was sat in the tree and started stretching its wings and fanning out its tail and I suspected it was about to take flight. I held focus on it and a voice in my head was willing it to take flight and then it did. I wish your daughter success in capturing the image she wants and I true hope she will succeed.

The Lesser Jacana (Microparra capensis) is a much smaller version than its larger cousin. The Lesser is also regularly driven away by its version of the playground bully, the African Jacana. So it is rare indeed to see one of these small and pretty packages. We were lucky to see them this morning out on the small boat.

 

The shots we got were all in extremis. We had only brought out the smaller lenses. And these shy birds would never allow us to approach before they would take off. So these are stressing out the lenses, the sensors and the photographers, and cropped up the kazoo.

 

But poor as they may be, they are our only ones. We saw them once or twice again but those sightings were even poorer than this one.
