Nolari's single male cub. Entertaining for us, a bit exasperating for Nolari.

Amani's cubs in Mara North Consevancy Early July 2016

Thanks very much for posting the photos of Amani's cubs @@Lois Hild Photography!

I spent time with Amani in MNC in January 2016 when she was still pregnant (but about to pop). I am glad to see that 2 cubs are still doing well as of July - and their prospects for surviving through adulthood are increasing by the day.

LIFE AND DEATH IN THE SOUTHERN SERENGETI.

Quite like this image shot near Namiri Plains Camp in July 2016. Taken against a background of scorched earth, both prey and predator appear to be looking straight at my lens. Hope it doesn't upset any members but it does reflect the reality of life on the plains.

CHEETAH CUB - 6 WEEKS OLD.

Taken the day after the image above, this was one of 4, 6 week old cubs. We watched the mother cheetah catch and kill a juvenile Serengeti Thomson's gazelle and feast for about 30 minutes before re-locating with her cubs which were hidden about 300 yards away. She led them back to the carcass and they were observed licking the prey. Seems sad that she will be lucky to raise at least one to maturity. ( Current survival rate in the Serengeti is 5% - The Serengeti Cheetah Project ). Image taken near Namiri Plains Camp.

Two rather playful sub adults, taken close to Namiri Plains Camp in April 2016. Just after this sequence was taken they tried to take down a wildebeest but picked the wrong one and failed. Mum was looking on and a few moments later showed them how it was done.

I'm pleased with this one from the Mara in 2016 (Feb). Malika's son trying to figure out if he can take down a zebra.

Amidst White Wildflowers

Photographed at 5:42 pm on 6 February, 2014 in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 100, 1/200 sec., f/2.8, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

Our all-day drive in Masai Mara was coming to a close, with thoughts of dinner mixed with memories of a series of superb bird, reptile and mammal sightings.

@Anthony Gitau spotted two cheetah resting amidst white wildflowers. They were somewhat difficult to see in the reduced light which made his spot all the more impressive.

NORTHERN SERENGETI N.P. TANZANIA. 7th & 9th JULY 2015.

Whilst out on an afternoon game drive (14.00, Lamai Wedge) I noticed about 1/2 a mile to one side of our vehicle a blurred flash followed by a cloud of dust. Our guide agreed to investigate, on arrival we located a female cheetah and 2 cubs with a gazelle kill. The following images were taken during a 10 minute observation. As one cub was much more nervous than the other and disappeared into the long grass on our arrival, we decided to leave to let them feast in peace. Lots of hyena were about and we wanted them to feed well before the kill was discovered.

Two days later (06.30, 3 miles further south, just north of the Mara River) we located the family again and watched from a distance an unsuccessful hunt. Amazingly when the mother aborted the chase the lucky gazelle turned towards her and started to follow her back to where she had hidden her cubs. The gazelle approached to about 20 yards of the cheetah who fortunately by now was pre-occupied with maternal duties, one of the cubs had climbed a small tree and was having great difficulty returning to terra firma. (Incident too far away for any meaningful images).

Image 1: On arrival at the kill, as seen.

Image 2: Mother with the more bold cub.

Image 3: As 2 but reasonable shot of the butterfly, top right.

Image 4: The bold cub with lipstick.

Image 5: Two days later, Mother with her 2 cubs.

Image 6: The shy cub.

@johnweir Image #3 is fantastic and engaging in that it captures aspects of life and death very well. That butterfly being there is so ironic and unexpected. What a great picture.
