I have been hoping for better photos, but have only had glimpses since. These were taken in February from the visitor centre at Montrose basin. We had just bought a cup of coffee and saw this (and took the photos) through the glass window.

A few times in the past we have wondered if we had seen a Whimbrel, but have not been sure - they look quite similar to Curlews in the books. This third picture shows how different they are in real life, the Whimbrel is so much smaller, and the stripe on the head is very distinct. (This confirms that the birds we saw in the past were Curlews!)

So having spent a life time without seeing one, we were thrilled to see our first one, and learned about its behaviour. We were also delighted to see it again about a month later at the same part of Upton Warren.

I thought it was about time I posted a few more birds. None from the UK (yet, he says hopefully), but we went to Southern Portugal for a week at the end of September and  had a number of enjoyable sightings. We stayed at Olhao for 4 nights and Sagres for 3 nights.

Quite high up! A number of birds migrate across the Sagres area on their way towards Africa.

Another bird we were particularly keen to see. As well as being beautiful, it is particularly interesting. The only other Azure-Winged Magpies live in the far east of Asia. The theory was that those in Portugal must have been brought back by sailors who had visited Asia. However, some bones were found in a cave in Gibralter which were about 40, 000 years old. Since then, genetic analysis has shown that the two populations separated about 1 millions years ago. They are now seen as two distinct species.

The last bird was in thick foliage above a stream - we had a lot of fun trying to catch a shot in the few seconds it moved into a more open patch. As we turned away for a moment we saw this crossing the track...

We only saw it for a couple of seconds, initially I thought "Otter", but I think it is a Mink, presumable escaped or released from a fur farm. (My skill has developed over the last 2 years so I do know it is not a bird:))

When we arrived at our apartment in Olhao, it was dark. When I went to make a cup of tea next morning, this was the view from our balcony (at 400mm). There are a series of saltpans which provided great viewing.
