That is the end of the Mallorca section. We saw a number of other common birds which I didn't photograph or post (Pigeon, Wood Pigeon, Carrion Crow, Blue Tt, Great Tit, Robin, Moorhen) - and perhaps a few I have forgotten and a couple that were unidentifiable. So 50 that made the list and 74 photos altogether from a week in Mallorca - pleasing for us.. We only stayed in a small part of the island -we didn't visit the south, mountainous areas or cliffs. I am sure that an experienced birder would see many more than we did.

It certainly looks like you had a great time on Mallorca, @@TonyQ!

That north east corner of Majorca has been on my radar for a while! Wonder what it's like in June/July?( besides crowded!)

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry for the delay in replying (Have beein in Scotland!)

@PeterHG it was a great place to visit

@Dave Williams  I have not been at that time of year. It would be hotter, and there would probably be fewer migrating birds. I think the end of April/beginning of May is probably a good time. Autumn is also supposed to be good.

Anyway, back to the UK.....

Edit: I am having problems posting photos. The last 2 attempts the software has created a frame around the picture and put a black box below it. It has also tried to put in the EXIF data as text. I will close down and try again, but if no luck I will stop.

This bird has already been posted from Mallorca, but as I know I will not beat my overall total from last year (no trip to Africa!) I want to beat my UK total of 138.

I have never seen starlings catching insects in the air before this viewing. It was fascinating to watch. I am amazed how they can catch new insects while still holding on to the ones already in their beak.

158. (UK.112). Cuckoo  Cuculus canorus

      Cuckoo-1.jpg.2c0a5cbb5c8b01668635aaedbbc0ddbc.jpg

Coney Meadow, Worcestershire         02.05.2017

This is only the second Cuckoo I have seen. Last year's was a distant grey blob. At Coney Meadow I was walking towards a viewing screen overlooking a reed bed, hoping to see Reed Warblers. Sitting on top of the screen was this cuckoo - probably also hoping to see Reed Warblers so that she could lay eggs in their nests.

This is a Rufous form of the cuckoo which is supposed to be fairly rare in the UK.

Splendid cuckoo @TonyQ  I wonder why they look like a bird of prey-when flying they remind me of a sparrowhawk, and it often seems to be meadow pipits mobbing one I wonder if they know what the cuckoos are up to?
