Baby cheetahs AND baby serval!  Plus giant leopard!  Your campsites look splendid.  You picked the special ones for sure.  Glad the elephant backed off.  Yikes!  Fabulous photos of it all.   You finally got to do the self-drive.  Well worth the wait.

@AtravelynnThanks for your kind words - Long time no see.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you too.  You got your Christmas presents in Sept/Oct, right?  Guess I got mine late Oct-Nov in Kenya.  During the pandemic I strayed from safaritalk, that's why no see.  Might there be an upcoming honeymoon in Africa for you?

@AfricaloverGreat thread! I just returned from a self-drive safari in Serengeti, Tarangire, Arusha- my first time visiting East Africa (and returning to Africa!) since leaving Chinko, CAR in 2014. We spent 5 days camping near the Seronera, and it surpassed my wildest expectations. We also had some exciting encounters similar to yours... Once, in Tarangire, I was pinned in my tent for a few hours while two lion rested in a tree next to me. Another night in Serengeti we had a large group of hyena circling our campfire- and when I went to check out another "hyena" sneaking behind us, I found a lion instead! I hope to share some photos and a report soon...

Cheers

Wonderful photos, and the landscapes are to die for!

We had a similar experience with a stroppy bull elephant in Botswana in 2000. Our guide gently backed the vehicle up and stopped, and we just waited until the elephant calmed down and walked off.
