I know exactly what you mean about the Cuckoo-hawk. I was surprised to see what I had on camera on closer inspection too. A lifer for me in St Lucia last year.

Your Common Fiscal is no more though, they have been split in to two species Northern and Southern. What the difference is I haven't a clue!!

Having had a birthday shortly after that photo was taken, I now consider myself officially in the GOF club, and as such will stick with the old...

Thanks also @Tdgravesand @Galana.

A few degrees of Latitude and the cost of a new bloody Field Guide.

On that very subject I have just googled and found this back in 2017.

"As I have been creating my world list on BUBO, I realise that my 'common fiscal shrike' from Lake Manyara in Tanzania in 2010 has been split into northern and southern. Is there any way to differentiate by photographs? I saw an adult and a juvenile as attached. Thanks in advance!
Dave"

Straight question and only answered by geographic demarcation from 'experts'.

What rubbish.

Congrats on your century, Peter and a beautiful shot and species to reach it. Also for me that Striped Pipit would have been a lifer.

Now the River Trip itself. This is a trip which follows a dry river-bed from close to the town of Giyani to somewhere very close to the Western boundary of the Kruger National Park, and then follows a second dry river bed back to very near the starting point. The two river-beds are the Molototsi and the Klein Letaba, and every year we reverse the order in which we run them.

It is primarily a 4x4 outing, taking 4-5 days to do about 170km. The river beds are both subject to extensive sand mining by the locals, so ecological damage is a non-issue. Of course, I always take the camera along, although opportunities for bird photography have become scarce in recent years as I am often guiding the newer guys over the rougher sections. But we spend one night next to the Kruger, and here I usually get a couple of hours in the late afternoon to go try.
