Kalaharikind

A trip to Rooisand NR (11 Februry 2023) was blown to pieces by the wind. The swarms of midges attacking me didn't seem bothered by it at all. About 20 kms further, at Stony Point, it was a lovely, calm day.

From Stony Point to Harold Porter NBG. I'd forgotten that Saturdays are Parkrun days... The place was packed with people busy with a lightly less leisurely way of spending a Saturday morning, and I didn't spend much time there.

The one bird I really wanted to see; you'll have to make do with this EBC of a lifer:

41    Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher

Trochocercus cyanomelas

The male Paradise FC that was flitting about in the same area was even less accommodating the the BM.

Not a particularly productive birding day, what with the wind and Parkrunners (bookshops were also involved), but fun was had.

My local RSPB reserve is the departing place for a Saturday morning Parkrun, the car park is rammed . At least they don't run in the reserve though!

Thanks @BRACQUENE! My favourite name: Witliesbosbontrokkie. Chinspot Batis doesn't have the same ring to it, does it? Yes, at least we have lots of sunshine. Cape winter coming up, though: wind, rain, wind, bit of sun, wind, rain, some of that white stuff you guys love so much, wind, rain, bit of sun, wind, rain... But, a sunny day in the Cape in winter is absolutely glorious!

I guess the plants don't mind the runners that much, @Dave Williams

Thanks @Peter ConnanMissed the Paradise that was in the same area as the Blue-mantled, though. Ah well, some other time/place.

Wordle, but with added fun:

A really nice initiative from BirdLife SA.

Birding from the car and photographing all kind of tiny birds sitting on the barb wire ... that is how I remember much of Western Cape birding. Too bad about HP, we have loved our time there ... and will repeat it this November. Pretty much all of your stops in fact.

@xelasHP stays brilliant, just try to avoid it early on a Sat morning.

@TdgravesNever played Wordle? Really? LetterBoxed for you, then.  Brilliantly frustrating. And then there's the Grauniad's Wordiply.

But, back to birds, this time of the garden variety.

49    Olive Thrush
Olyflyster
Turdus olivaceus

We try to keep as much of the wild banana tree as undisturbed as possible: the dead flowers make a lovely nesting site:

Our neighbours have a wild peach tree. In Feb/March, when the fruits ripen, it becomes a wildly popular fly-in restaurant.

Look, there's the orange breast, and the white supercilium/eye brow/white stripey thing above the eye. Must be. Saw it with my own two eyes.
