Rainbirder,

What's the story behind those Cheetahs?

That image was taken in the Mara about 20 minutes drive west of the Intrepids lodge in July 2007. The group comprised of a female and her 4 almost grown cubs. It was a beautiful clear crisp but cold morning. We found the group about an hour after having left the Mara Intrepids ( we were detained by a Hyena clan returning from a hunt). The cheetahs were on a wee grassy knoll and were showing interest in a distant herd of Tommys. We spent about 45 mins with them then had to move on as our kids were bored and started squabbling with each other! I will never know whether they initiated a hunt!

We were the only people present though our guide radioed in the sighting as we left. In 4 days at Intrepids we saw a number of cheetah including two lone males, this family of 1+4, a family of 1+2 and a female with a half-grown partially blind cub -the sight of which broke my daughter's heart.

I'm typing this on an iPad and I can't seem to get it to link an image but if you check out page 6 of the Safaritalk cheetah images in the photography forum you will find an image of this unfortunate cub.

I have spent the morning dreaming of time spent around Lebala camp.

Yes, I'm dreaming of time around Lebala Camp now - and I've never even been there.

I've just found this thread - what a great idea! And what fantastic photos on here.

Here's my own effort... A male cheetah photographed after tracking it on foot.
