Almost a whole year after my last Blog entry.. i'd better have a good excuse.. Well, how about this. Finished my contract at Basecamp Masai Mara, and at the same time was offered the chance to work with a company that has been flying passenger balloons close to the Amboseli National Park in South eastern Kenya. The same company holds a lease on a 20 thousand acre piece of land, part of the Olgulului-Lolarashi Group Ranch which encircles almost 90% of Amboseli park. The Kitenden Wildlife corrid

The Big Six....?! Cows. Inkishu (Maa)... thousands of them, in the Mara game reserve daily. Especially along the Northern boundary, along the Talek river... they cross into the park nightly, at about sunset. Hundreds of head of cattle in every herd, bells clonking as they cross the Talek river, between adjacent camps and lodges. Sundowners now consist of watching the dust rising from the cattle crossings, as the sun sets over the Mara. There are WAY too many sheep around the manyattas.. overg

Back in the Masai Mara, after a US adventure.. mainly in various parts of New Mexico. Getting a hot air Balloon pilots licence was an interesting, challenging and very very fun thing to do! The mara is always exciting to come back to, and after the longest break i've had from here in over 2 years, it is especially so this time! There seem to be very few animals around, but November is one of the times when they are most widely dispersed as they move in search of better quality graze and water. T

The Masai Mara is now suddenly baking.... After an unusually wet August and early september.. the sun is out and the grass is responding by starting to turn dull green and then brown soon after. The unseasonal rains have definitely kept the Gnu here longer than i have witnessed in the past.. just this morning there was a line of them at least 2 km long, moving east to west int he area north of the Talek river, but still to the east of Ol Kiombo... I'm told by reliable sources there are still man

The Gnu are in the Mara in force, and have been concentrated in the south and west. The Mara triangle has had huge numbers of the Wildebeest over there, and its easy to see why they went straight across the Mara river when they got here! The Conservancy had burnt large areas of the grassland at the right time, so of course all the arttractive fresh green shoots of grass were inviting! Well, now, about 4 weeks into the arrival of the gnu in the Mara, they are moving slowly across the northern se

Its been a busy week so far.. and the Tree plantation fence s are almost complete! Now we work on the gates, adn a new idea i had, to install stiles so that old routes and paths for foot access are not completely blocked off.. Todat the media announced that the government and opposition sides have reached agreement on a power sharing deal in Kenya.. hopefully this will allow us to start re-building what has been left inthe aftermath of the political crisis that has left this country on the brin

..having endured YET another night of screeching, murmuring and chattering Baboons in the Fig tree approximately all of 10 meters outside the house...i awake to a bright clear day, and after a quick breakfast of toast and a cuppa... out to the Tree Plantation... the new fence is coming along like a dream.. something HAS to give soon..it doesnt make sense that everything is going according to plan. In Africa, the plan is always that 'there is no plan'! anyhow, we've reconfirmed the beacons for t

I have really sore forearms...from more or less totall dismantling an electric water pump that is totally unknown to the entire internet. Not a single reference could be found to a Linz Electic brand of submersible water pump. all the same, it is as i type lifting what i hope will be about 2000 litres of fresh clean water from the new hand dug well in the tree plantation. sadly, it runs on ac power, meaning the genny is currently running too..but its the starting point of calculating well capc

George is definitely outside the house in the river.. i can hear him... now there's been no rain for the last 4 days the water level's dropped to.. what, can't be more than a metre....so where is he?! how can an animal that size conceal itself in that little water? there he goes again, snorting and huffuing away....strange...
