@pedro maia we did a Pelagic from Sagres, but didn't see as many birds as you did! You coped well with the tricky conditions to get very good photos. It is difficult with a moving boat and moving birds:D

@Dave Williams we found a useful birdwatching book published (online) by the tourist authority, showing different possible birding sites

I have attached a link - the fourth guide down is the Birdwatching one

https://www.visitalgarve.pt/en/menu/267/guides.aspx

When was that Tony, Sagres is supposed to be the best spot from the end of August.

That's the spirit, @Dave Williams ! My wife and I are also thinking about driving south to Portugal and perhaps the Extremadura in February/March next year, depending on the situation later on. @pedro maia, your showcase of the birdlife there is certainly convincing. Keep it up, please!

Let’s hope you can came here, winter is great here.

@pedro maia

We were there in the end of September 2017. Lots of birds migrating, but often very high! A good place to visit though.

@pedro maia, great Pelagic, Im hoping to do one later in the year, I  need a few months to talk myself into it and prepare the sea legs. I don't do boats, but in this instance will make an exception I guess. You did well with your photos.

Next one is a species that I tried to find several times since last year but kept eluding me, it´s not really rare but can be quite difficult to spot, at least for me, and this picture is a good example on how easy it is not to spot it:

Now one of my favourite species, the Beast:

#223, Cinerous vulture, 20/8, Guerreiro, Castro Verde

It was feeding on this carcass

with two griffons, I wasn´t able to take a decent picture of the griffons.

And now an EBC, these guys are easy to hear but quite difficult to see, this one jumped form very close to my feet and after reacting, pointing the camera, focusing and shooting this was the best I could do and it´s going to be very difficult to see another one this year.

#224, Common quail, 20/8, Guerreiro, Castro Verde

So do I. Printed on 'canvas' some Yuppy would blow a fair bit of his bonus for it.;)

not just any old ebc but quite possibly THE ebc of the year. IMO.

Clearly the Nikon Coolpix P900 is the camera to have for ebc's

You did well on spotting the Stone Curlew! That Cinereous Vulture is really impressive and you got a good shot. Others have already commented on your amazing Quail shot and I agree: a winner. You were really lucky to at least get a glimpse of it. I have heard it a number of times, but never managed to actually see one.

It would be great to win the ebc of the year prize, after making us search for toilets in google @Galana deserves that we hit him where it hurts more .

Let me correct you, I wouldn’t be able to take a picture of a flying quail with the P900, even such an artistic one, the picture was taken with the DSLR.

I can’t take the credit for spotting the stone curlews, it was another birder who showed me where the6 were.

Oh how cruel.:( This from Britain's oldest Ally. I never made anyone search for toilets. That was you and @BRACQUENE's choice!

searching for toilets is something that I am sure we have all needed to do at some time on safari so in this world where everything is being done online a little bit of practice doesn't go amiss.

@pedro maia, the Cinereous Vulture is probably top of my European wish list, I wonder if Ill ever get to see one....  The common Quail is something else, one for those with a vivid imagination

End of vacation, tomorrow work resumes so it´s time to post the final additions from August, it ended up as a productive month B).

I was hoping to get a better one of this species but wasn´t able:

#225 (N45), Spectacled warbler, 16/8, Sapal de Venta Moinhos, Castro Marim

Same with this one, an EBC will have to do the job:

#226 (N46), European green woodpecker, 24/8, Almargem, Tavira

This time of the year there are some lost vagrants that arrive to Portugal, this one is not easy to find but a few of them visit us every year:

#227 (N47), Red-necked phalarope, 28/8, Salinas de Olhão
