649/EC118) Blue-Headed Parrot (Pionus menstruus) / Schwarzohrpapagei

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. We did not do very well with Parrots. Saw several species but they were rarely photographable.

650/EC119) Striped Cuckoo (Tapera naevia) / Streifenkuckuck

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. ebird says "rarely seen" but this one did not know about its supposedly secretive nature. Nicely singing his heart out on a wire.

652/EC121) White-Whiskered Hermit (Phaethornis yaruqui) / Smaragdschattenkolibri

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. Finally reached the reserve itself where things got better photo-wise. Our welcome bird, a very large Hummer, cool-looking with its extremely long, decurved bill.

653/EC122) Stripe-Throated Hermit (Phaethornis striigularis) / Streifenkehl-Schattenkolibri

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. A much smaller Hermit, much rarer. A quick feeder visit was all it gave us.

654/EC123) Purple-Chested Hummingbird (Amazilia rosenbergi) / Rosenbergamazilie

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. Quite a few of them here but I seem to have neglected them. Feeder-photo of a female only. There were more Hummer species but we´d have better sightings of the others later in the trip.

655/EC124) Blue-Tailed aka Choco Trogon (Trogon comptus) / Blauschwanztrogon

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. The main attraction at the reserve are not the feeders but this canopy tower where we spent the next few hours.

Handybild_20.JPG.9fa6574b71ceb652b9448f243b720b9c.JPG

Things started slowly but ultimateyl we would see a good number of birds up here. Trogons are always especially cool. This one is a "Choco endemic". Choco? "Named after the Colombian state Chocó, the name originally referred to the lowland rain forest on the Colombian coast. This region is characterized by extremely high precipitation and extraordinary species diversity." Not much left of the forest in Western Ecuador so this reserve is very important.

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. One of the signature species here is the Scarlet-Breasted Dacnis, a stunning little bird. Which we unfortunately never saw. Had to do with its cousin.

660/EC129) Green Honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza) / Kappennaschvogel

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. Not the best sighting, high up in the tree against the light. Enjoyed much better sightings of this one in Costa Rica where it regularly attends feeders.

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. Even the ebird description says the crest is "orangey" - so why call it tawny-crested?

Rio Silanche, 11/8/2022. Flew right up to a branch close to the tower. The others had a good laugh at me becuase that surprising arrival had me do some funny (non-intentional) noises.
