719/EC188) Indigo Flowerpiercer (Diglossa indigotica) / Indigohakenschnabel

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. One of the signature birds of this area, this is a very localised species. Probably quite beautiful when you properly see it with deep blue plumage and red eyes, but we did not get much of that.

721/EC190) Orange-Breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola jucunda) / Orangebrustkotinga

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. The morning had become more and more frustrating. We located several Antbirds and similar stuff but failed to get a good look at any of them. Same with Treerunners and friends. At one point we were trying to hear(!) a bird. Hear, not even see it. Because its song was so faint and subtle. And then we watched a bush with sometimes maybe moving leaves because apparently one damned Leaftosser or other was in there. Another of those instances that proved all this birding still has not made a very zen person out of me. This was too much for me, and I begged, cried and insisted to get the hell out of this Leaftosser hell. Which everybody was quite relieved about. :D

Karma would mean that the Universe should punish me for this outburst, but I just don´t do Karma. Found this very nice bird (I had really wanted to see) shortly afterwards:

722/EC191) Ornate Flycatcher (Myiotriccus ornatus) / Schmucktyrann

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. Quite a nice Flycatcher. And a patient poser, a very welcome change after all the morning´s skulkers.

I can relate to that. And especially the continual thought in my head of "While we are in here straining our eyes and lens at some skulker, I wonder what we are missing outside in 20/20 viz and good light?" as your beautiful fruiteater amply demonstrated.

As well as back to front dates it is high time some people learned to count above twelve when telling the time.:P I have known them miss flights by being twelve hours late in the p.m.

Great photos.

Totally agree.  I admit I am a bird photographer more than a birder - if I can't see it clearly enough to get a good photo it doesn't count.  Give me disneyland over barely discernible rustling leaves (am I allowed to say that here )

What a beautiful fruit-eater you managed to grab and your cake-eater shots are excellent, too! Great story ;)

723/EC192) Golden-Collared Honeycreeper (Iridophanes pulcherrimus ) / Halsband-Naschvogel

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. The time of suffering was over - we arrived at another feeder station and had a very good time there. Especially the banana section was very productive.

725/EC194) Bronze-Winged Parrot (Pionus chalcopterus) / Glanzflügelpapagei

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. Not a feeders guest but perched reasonably close. We had seen them a lot the previous day but never really in photo range.

730/EC199) Golden Tanager (Tangara arthus) / Braunbrusttangare

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. Another very good-looking species. But a very common one, and since we saw it all the time it lost some of its initial appeal.

731/EC200) Crimson-Rumped Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus haematopygu) / Blutbürzelarassari

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. A big highlight, one of the birds I really had wanted to see. Made quite a spectacular entrance, all Tanagers fled the scene as quickly as they could. With good reason - Toucanets eat everything!

732/EC201) Empress Brilliant (Heliodoxa imperatrix) / Rotstirn-Brillantkolibri

Mashpi, 13/8. Afterwards we moved to the Hummer feeders. Very, very nice and entertaining but not too much in the way of different species. We all had some good fun dressing up as feeders, and it was fantastic to see them so close -and feel them!

734/EC203) Rose-Faced Parrot (Pyrilia pulchra) / Rosenwangenpapagei

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. A beautiful Parrot, unfortunately did not give us a good look. Something scared them, and the whole flock was off all of a sudden.

735/EC204) Velvet-Purple Coronet (Boissonneaua jardini) / Hyazinthkolibri

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. The most common Hummer around - very beautiful species when the light is right. In the shadows it´s just a black thing.

736/EC205) Black-and-White Becard (Pachyramphus albogriseus) / Graurückenbekarde

Mashpi, 13/8/2022. All good things must come to an end, and after lunch it was back to the road and difficult birding. But it was actually quite ok, even though it started drizzling we picked up some good stuff. This is a female Becard, the male is indeed black & white.
