Galana's Seventh. Lucky numbers.

Thanks.

Not much chance of eyeshine on my next offering.

Today was a bit damp so venturing further than the shops was the limit of my outings.

I am reminded of recent discussions  by @BRACQUENEand @Kitsafariin particular about the inclusion of domestic birds in counts and of Foxy @Dave Williams's comments on positive ID even on EBCs. I think a previous year agreed that the 'rules' did not specify whether the  birds were alive or dead

So as our evening meal was served I put all these 'Ifs' to good use and offer the dressed but very tender Red-legged Partridge for all three of my counts as although it was not viewed from the Lounge it was definitely in the Kitchen and Dining room.

Red-legged Partridge. Served roasted with Buttered Parsnips and Red currant jelly. :o:lol::D

Whilst an introduced species they do occur in the wild as well as the kitchen here. Shall I get my coat?

I don't know about that. They came as a pair and we had one each and they were very tender.:D

The sunshine this morning persuaded me to unpack my camera bag and head out one last time.

The sea was still too rough after the week ends houlie for much to be visible so rather than waste my time I headed for my small woodland patch but even there the lbjs were hiding.

So I called round at the Glascoe Dubh even though I knew the sun would be in my eyes but I wanted a migrant duck before they left for the north.

And so it was.

A bit of  an EBC but in the bag for the year.

029. BY/IOM Widgeon. Glascoe Dubh. IOM. I said the sun would be in my face..

Then I realised that I had better get a Fieldfare before they left too.

030. Fieldfare. Glascoe. IOM. Doubtful I would get either of these from the Lounge  although I am holding back on a few regulars that I feel will go on the lounge list as the weather settles.

And now the cameras and bins are firmly packed ready for Airport Security on Wednesday afternoon. The next offering will be from south of the Equator in Southern Tanzania. Interweb connections permitting.

Thanks everyone. I am sitting here waiting for On line check in to open, I find it helps to let them know you are going to show up.

Just whiled away the time by reading @michael-ibk's excellent report on Mana Pools.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sitting in Schipol on my return to Wiffy land and thought to report in and offer some of what may have to follow. Low scored due to pressure of elephant and big cat and dog encounters taking my eye off the BY ball.

But without any promises a report will get done and BY score modesrly enhanced but as a taster of what may follow here are two beauties.

DSCN2523.JPG.d911097a69c2b9851d496f507f0031fd.JPG

and if all else fails we can clearly blame it on KLM's abject failure to operate a flight in accordance with our tickets. Worth a report in its own right.

Hot news. The cat in my avatur has a cousin look alike.

Well my media of choice is 'Picasso' so the least I can do is emulate the great man.:o

@Soukous

One tries.

Now to my avatur.

And here is his cousin from Ruaha.

Are they perhaps related

Make good bookends.

KLM got us home but failed abjectly on the way out.

Don't worry about EBCs. Some decent photos got through the net despite my best efforts.

OK. I have had a night's sleep after leaving DAR at midnight Monday/Tuesday on a long trek home via AMS-=pause for 4 hours-MAN, pause for another 4 hours, and then IOM at 17.25 and driven home on a TAR road in a luxury car. So smoooth! Gotta go dpmestics for a while so need to feed out a first few.

Spoiler. We have been to Africa and not photoed a Black or Yellow-billed KITE OR a Pied Crow so fans of those species will have to wait. Is this a first?

Noted other folks comments on selectivity but surely this is Big Year and I am not sure that selection actually works. Nobody is chasing numbers but I don't see how 'numbers' cannot be the root of any game which is based on numbers. How else is BIG counted? Otherwise it will be 'Best Year'.  Just me asking.

To work.

I have quite a few to get through, though those darn cats and dogs etc., did reduce the overall total quite a bit and I was also mildly chided by my companions by missing an Elephant whilst engaged in teasing out an avian skulker in the nearby bush as the vehicle came to a standstill.

So I will do as usual and just run through the results in 'order of first seen' which may be fuzzy but with a later 'improvement' if such came along later in the trip. I DID get better/worse Beaters and Turaco than that which I opened with above.

So we 'eventually' arrived in DAR and overnighted as planned (no thanks to KLM) at the nearby Jalkita Motel.

Next morning awoke to the sound of birds, and trains and planes so rose and ventured out in the Motel grounds.

First up was the ubiquitous House Crow, common on the Coast now.

DSCN1083.JPG.111d5474d0f91d4d8d265e495e1ad1df.JPG

031. Indian House Crow. Dar es Salaam.

Then came a kingfisher. I had it down as Brown-hooded but am not so sure but will keep it thus even though it is Grey-headed but with a later version from Lake Manze in Nyerere NP.

Brown hooded (put it down to jet lag) Kingfisher.

add in the right one.

032. BH Kingfisher. DAR and Lake Manze.

Next an easier one.

033. Scarlet-chested Sunbird. DAR.

plus later improvements with males.

And finally one that followed around our whole trip and may even come to IOM later to boost that list.

034. Spotted Flycatcher. Spotted indeed at every location we visited. Maybe that is how it got its name @michael-ibk?

Our first bird from the bush was on our drive down to Mikumi National Park Gate;

Also on the Park Gate bowl was..DSCN1136.JPG.96fe735bd48e05e479601ee584bd17f3.JPG

038. White-browed Sparrow Weaver. Very common so I resisted more.

This rear end of a Marabou was all I could manage until our penultimate day.

040. Blacksmith Lapwing. Probably Mikumi NP but they were exceedingly common.

Overall I was very pleased with Mikumi National Park which has come a long way from the dust bowl I remember from my first visit in 2002.

More follows tomorrow.
