Western Demerara. America´s version of our Common Sandpiper. Even more so when they are not breeding - no spots then. We only saw one spotted individual.

Demerara River. Small, inconspicuous flycatcher found in the understory of coastal and gallery forests as well as mangroves.

Demerara River. Found on the coast in mangroves and in Amazonia in flooded forest along some major rivers.

248/E1) European Roller (Coracias garrulus) / Blauracke

 

Vals, Tirol, 9 & 10/8/2023. A very late start for my locals - but at least I can kick it off with a proper mega! Not photowise I´m afraid (kept a good distance), but the bird itself certainly is. Rollers have disappeared from Central Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, they could not survive in our modern agriculture. A handful of pairs are still holding out in the South-East of Austria but they will probably go extinct in the next years. I think three years ago they even were declared functionally extinct since no brood was successful. Rollers probably never bred in Tirol (my province) in the Alps. And there it was, all of a sudden, popped up in an alpine tributary valley. The bird was discovered on Monday and is still around, I visited it today and yesterday. A really extraordinary visitor and a new one for my Austria list.

Mils, Tirol, 12/3. My only pre-surgery bird this year. It´s a rarity in my area, so could not resisit it.

250/E3) Spectacled Warbler (Curruca conspicillata) / Brillengrasmücke

 

Hornboden, Tirol, 25.6. The first time I used the camera again (Andreas had to carry it most of the time though ). Was lured up to the mountains for this ebc. Lousy photos but a spectacular bird for Austria - the very first record! They are at home in the Mediterranean, have only seen it once before in Portugal. Fortunately it chose a pretty flat panoramic trail, very easy to walk. Fascinating why this individual decided it had enough of the South and fancied some alpine air. Stayed at least for two weeks, but might have lingered longer - almost impossible to spot when it´s silent.

Sumpfkopf, Tirol, 8/7. The first of three raptors I don´t see a lot (and never very close).

 

 

 

Curiously two of them were around - interesting why two adult males would share this area.

 

 

One was attacked by a Peregrine.

Sumpfkopf, Tirol, 8/7. Not uncommon per se but they have huge territories in the Alps so any sighting is a cool one. A second year bird.
