Stolid Grazer

Photographed at 5:16 pm on 19 January, 2016 at Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 200, 1/100 sec., f/4, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

*****************************************************************************************************

~ Throughout my stay as a guest at Leopard Hills in January, 2016 there were plentiful, regular sightings of both leopards and white rhinos. It was a cavalcade of both species, day after day.

What most surprised me was that the sightings were of different individuals, rather than continuous repeats. This rhino was enjoying grass beside a slight bend in a dusty track.

Peter Muigai.

The young Rhinos are growing up, Lets try and ensure they are always safe.

Only in Nairobi National Park can you get such a photo.

Meru Rhino on the Run

Taken on 30 September, 2014 at 11:13 am in the Meru National Park Rhino Sanctuary, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera with an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens

ISO 100, f/2.8, 1/2000 sec., 400mm handheld Manual shooting mode in a safari van guided by @@Anthony Gitau of Bigmac Africa Safaris.

**********************************************************************************************************************************************************

~ We'd enjoyed an especially productive morning with several fine kudu sightings, various birds, butterflies, dragonflies, all under lovely sunny skies.

Rounding a corner, Anthony pointed out a rhino watching us. It turned and broke into a fast run, heading down toward the gravel bar near the river.

For several minutes we observed the rhino from a discreet distance, enjoying the sense of freedom which Meru offers to both resident wildlife and fortunate visitors.

A female and male (longer horns) black rhino near Lookout in the Masai Mara NR, Kenya. The male was chasing the female when we first came across them. Both rhino's horns had been tagged.

Rhinos?? My favorite!! Spectacular Black rhinos in Lewa, one on foot in Damaraland (which charged just after my pic), and then the famous rhino orphan Morani taking a nap at Sweetwaters Tented Camp back in 92....

Nine Red-billed Oxpeckers

Photographed at 12:24 pm on 9 February, 2014 in Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 800, 1/3200 sec., f/5.6, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

****************************************************************************************************

The entire morning had been a drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, including an excellent of several white rhinos. We felt satisfied as we made our way to the park exit.

Glancing to the right, I asked @Anthony Gitau if the red oxpecker taxi was a black rhino. Rhino and birds posed long enough for this portrait before sauntering away.

One from last year's trip to Namibia. Strangely, she(?) looks more attractive after a manicure in my opinion.

Rhino photos I can do. I took hundreds in January.

The black rhino cow has two calves, her most recent and one from previous years. Her story is coming up in my stalled trip report. ;)

This rhinoceros ambled toward the safari vehicle at a steady pace.

At this range it filled the frame such that it soon was too close to photograph, at which point it turned and walked away.

Black rhino charged us and hit the vehicle. It happaned so quickly, that I could not even take a photo of it. The guide stepped on the pedal, but the Rhino ran along us for a while, pushin the side of the vehicle. Here is a photo of the dent on the vehicle - the strongest part of the Land Cruiser - the post between the two doors. I don't want to even think about what could have happened if we were with a small sedan car:

Wow, that must have been an extremely grumpy Rhino. Beautiful night photos, especially love the one with the Elephants.
