Pedro´s Rookie Year

But geese are really complicated (or, more likely, people complicate things).

There was another goose in the bunch that I caught with those Hail Mary shots, it was supposed to be the Taiga Bean Goose (there was also the Tundra Bean Goose but I couldn´t get it on a picture):

796135526_IMG_47481IDFabalis.jpg.56a9513cc082015383796fe97c1839e7.jpg

I thought I had another species for my BY count, however it turns out that it´s not posible to have a clear ID of the goose in this picture because it isn´t posible to see if the amount of orange of the bill is the correct for that species, which now I know that is a split from the former Bean Goose, and even if some authorities don´t recognise that split I can´t be sure so I can´t use it.

And I´m also not going to use the Snow Goose (also in the bunch but I had it´s picture from another day because there´s no doubt on the species but there´s no way to know if it is wild or if it is an escape...

Wild goose chase makes sense here...

And as a bonus I reached my goal, 200 in Portugal, 260 in total, a number that was absolutely unimaginable for me when I started my BY 10 months ago!!

Fantastic Pedro, 200 is really spectacular for one (European) country. December birding in Portugal seems to be pretty awesome. 😎

Thanks @TonyQ and @michael-ibk, I found out that my country is very good for birding and right now is at it´s best, with good weather most of the time.

Well done indeed. 200 is a very creditable count and you have done a lot to promote Portuguese birding in the process!

Top birders in Portugal have life lists of +-370 species, many of those are rarities and also they don’t take pictures of those birds, I would say that if I keep doing this I may have something like 100 species to try to add to my list in the next few years.

Congratulations on your awesome achievement, @pedro maia! 200 birds in a single European country is a fantastic result. Seeing your winter photos I am now sorry not to push more about visiting Portugal over x-mas. Well, there is always a next year.

Thanks Alex, the birds (these or others) will be here next year and you´ll probably find better airfares for other occasions.

My BY is over, time to think about next one and I was feeling the need to upgrade my equipment, not the DSLR because it would be too expensive and probably a bit of a waste but the bridge camera, to have more zoom and a bit more quality in distant shots, so I offered myself a Nikon P900 for Christmas and today I went out to try it, it was only a pity that the light wasn´t good but I´m happy with the first results, I only used the birdwatching mode but I´ll have plenty of time to take better profit of this camera but it´s clear that the zoom is going to be very useful.

These are some of the pictures I took (didn´t look for new species), now there won´t be more birding for me in 2019, I´m going to Berlin for a couple of days and I won´t take any cameras:
